What General Liability Actually Covers

GL is the baseline policy every business needs. It covers four main categories:

Bodily Injury
A customer trips and falls in your store. GL pays their medical bills and your legal defense. Average bodily injury claim: $35,000.
Property Damage
You accidentally damage a client's equipment or building. GL covers the repair or replacement costs.
Personal / Advertising Injury
A competitor sues you for slander, libel, or copyright infringement in your marketing. GL covers defense and settlement.
Legal Defense Costs
Even if the lawsuit is groundless, GL pays attorney fees and court costs. Average defense cost: $75,000 to $150,000.

What GL Does NOT Cover

Four major gaps that surprise business owners:

How Your GL Rate Is Actually Calculated

Carriers use an exposure base to price GL. For most businesses it is gross revenue per $1,000. The formula:

Premium = (Revenue / $1,000) x Base Rate x Class Factor x Experience Mod

Worked Example: Landscaper vs Bookkeeper at $500k Revenue

FactorLandscaperBookkeeper
Annual Revenue$500,000$500,000
ISO Class Code97047 (landscaping)95625 (bookkeeping)
Base Rate per $1,000 Revenue$3.80$0.24
Class Factor1.35 (outdoor, equipment)1.0 (office only)
Experience Mod (first year)1.01.0
Annual GL Premium~$2,565/yr ($214/mo)~$120/yr ($10/mo)

This is why a landscaper at the same revenue as a bookkeeper pays 21x more. The exposure base (outdoor work, heavy equipment, access to client property) is fundamentally different. Classification codes are set by ISO (Insurance Services Office) and filed state-by-state.

Limit Options: $1M/$2M vs $2M/$4M vs Umbrella

The standard small business GL policy is written at $1M per occurrence / $2M annual aggregate. Most commercial leases and client contracts accept this.

Limit StructureTypical Add-on CostBest For
$1M/$2M (standard)BaselineMost businesses, required minimum
$2M/$4M aggregate+15-25% (~$8-15/mo)Larger client contracts
$1M/$2M + $5M umbrella+$40-60/moHigh-exposure industries, mid-market
$1M/$2M + $10M umbrella+$80-120/moConstruction, healthcare adjacent

The common search query "$2 million liability insurance cost" usually refers to the $1M/$2M aggregate policy, which is the standard. Actual $2M per-occurrence coverage is uncommon for small businesses and would cost significantly more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does general liability insurance cost per month?
General liability insurance costs a median of $45 per month ($538 per year) in 2026. Low-risk businesses like bookkeeping pay $22 to $35 per month. High-risk contractors pay $150 to $400 per month. The range reflects industry risk, revenue size, and coverage limits.
How much is $2 million liability insurance for a small business?
The standard GL policy already includes a $2 million aggregate limit at the $45/month median. Upgrading to a $2M per-occurrence policy is uncommon; most clients require $1M per occurrence with $2M aggregate. Adding an umbrella policy for $5M total coverage adds $40 to $60 per month.
What does general liability insurance actually cover?
GL covers bodily injury to third parties, property damage you cause, personal and advertising injury, and legal defense costs. It does not cover your employees (workers comp), professional mistakes (E&O), vehicles (commercial auto), or data breaches (cyber).
Do I need general liability as a sole proprietor?
Yes, in most practical situations. Most commercial leases require it. Most client contracts require it. Many professional platforms require it. For a sole proprietor in a low-risk field, GL typically costs $22 to $35 per month, less than the cost of defending a single frivolous claim.
Can I get GL without forming an LLC?
Yes. NEXT, Thimble, and Hiscox all issue GL policies to sole proprietors under their personal name or a DBA. You do not need to incorporate to get general liability insurance.
Is general liability the same as professional liability?
No. GL covers physical harm (someone slips, property gets damaged) and advertising injury. Professional liability (E&O) covers the economic harm from professional mistakes or advice errors. Most service businesses need both. See our professional liability cost page for details.
